His memoir has swordfights, drunken giants, stunts gone awry, and if not true love, then at least true infatuation between Elwes and costar Robin Wright (in spots, as with “The Princess Bride” itself, it’s a “kissing book”). And the film found fans in high places, namely the Vatican (Pope John Paul II) and the White House (Bill Clinton).Įlwes presents a thorough chronicle of one of the screen’s sweetest successes, albeit delayed. As with “Spinal Tap,” its endlessly quotable dialogue (“Have fun storming the castle”) became embedded in popular culture. It was, to say the least, unfair, and as the grandfather in the film, so indelibly played by Peter Falk, says to his grandson, “Who says life is fair?”īut what’s a fairy tale romance without a happy ending? “The Princess Bride” eventually found its audience. The cast was a lightning-in-a-bottle collection of seasoned character actors, comic geniuses, a wrestling legend, and two charismatic young leads. Director Rob Reiner was on a hot streak with “This is Spinal Tap,” “The Sure Thing” and “Stand by Me.” The screenwriter was Academy Award-winner (and Highland Park native) William Goldman, upon whose cherished book the film was based. ![]() ![]() “The Princess Bride,” a 1987 fairy tale romance, would seem to have had everything going for it.
